The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has banned Google’s AI-based chatbot called Bard from leaving the EU. The regulator stated that the developer did not provide descriptions or evaluation results of privacy measures or other documents.
Google introduced the Bard AI chatbot in February this year, and it soon launched in the US, UK, and other countries. The service was expected to launch in the EU this week, but the regulator intervened. DPC is the main compliance controller for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
EU legislation regarding AI is much stricter than that of the US or the UK. A prominent example is the situation with ChatGPT in Italy, where the chatbot was banned due to privacy concerns. Justice be done, the restrictions were lifted on May 1, but only after OpenAI provided all the necessary documentation.
As for Google, the situation has not yet been commented.
