Emma Coronel leaves prison El Chapo Wife

Emma Coronel, a former beauty queen and wife of drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was arrested in February 2021 in the state of California.

The wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was released on Wednesday after serving a sentence for several drug trafficking charges in the United States, the country’s Bureau of Prisons (BOP) reported.

Emma Coronel, a former beauty queen and mother of Guzmán’s two daughters, served a three-year sentence in a low-security federal institution in the city of Los Angeles, in the state of California, bordering Mexico.

“We can confirm that Emma Coronel Aispuro has been released,” the BOP told Reuters in an email message.

The office added that “for privacy and security reasons,” it would not provide “additional information” because it does not do so about people who are no longer in its custody.

The 34-year-old woman, born in the United Stateswas arrested in February 2021 at Dulle International Airport, Washington, on criminal charges of distribution of cocaine, heroin and other drugs.

That same year, Coronel reached a plea agreement with US authorities and admitted that she was the courier between Guzmán and other members of the Sinaloa cartel when he, who is currently serving a sentence in that country, was imprisoned in the Mexican Altiplano prison, where he was admitted in 2014.

It is not clear if Coronel has charges for drug trafficking or other crimes in Mexico. The Mexican prosecutor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.
