The Bitcoin industry, since its inception, has had leaders who have become known for their work in favor of the disruptive financial system. Year after year, personalities have emerged as flagships when talking about the adoption and development of Bitcoin and its technology. In 2023, this will no longer be a reality.  

This year, different people from all over the world demonstrated their interest in bitcoin and their work to spread its use among people. A laudable work that says a lot about the emerging technology that came to change the socioeconomic landscape as we know it. 

Like every year, Market Times dedicated itself to studying the cases of those who contributed the most to Bitcoin. This is how we present the list of the 15 most influential personalities in the Bitcoin industry in 2023. A list curated by this medium that recognizes the work of the most representative bitcoiners of the year that is about to end. 

1. Nayib Bukele

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele was the most influential character of all in 2023. The president made sure that the banks, media and governments of the world began to talk about a country that became forgotten and even discriminated against, as a result of the crime that plagued him. Bukele was in charge of deepening the presence of El Salvador in everyone’s minds and, with it, of Bitcoin, since the main digital currency on the market is legal tender in the Central American country.  

2. Casey Rodarmor

The developer and creator of the Bitcoin NFT Ordinals, Casey Rodarmor, was the most influential person in the entire Bitcoin ecosystem in 2023. With his creation, he managed to get all market players to start creating registrations in the Bitcoin network, giving rise to even a migration from other networks to the protocol conceived by Satoshi Nakamoto.

The next most influential person in the Bitcoin industry in 2023 is Paolo Ardoino, current CEO of Tether Limited, the company behind the USD stablecoin Tether (USDT), the most used stablecoin on the market.  

Ardoino carried out projects focused on mass adoption of bitcoin in 2023. And from Tether Limited they developed businesses with different aspects of the industry. In addition, they have a large presence in Latin America, especially in countries facing crises, such as Venezuela and Argentina.

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink is another of the most influential figures in the Bitcoin industry in 2023. The leader of the world’s largest asset manager changed the regulatory landscape for price-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs). of spot bitcoin.  

With his company’s formal application to the SEC to launch its own bitcoin spot ETF, Fink opened the doors to a very possible approval of these financial instruments in the coming weeks, which could kick off the BTC bull run estimated for 2024.

The CEO of ARK Invest, Cathie Wood, is another of the characters who most influence the Bitcoin ecosystem in 2023. Like Fink, this businesswoman dedicated herself to promoting the approval of spot bitcoin ETFs. And, in addition, she maintains a policy of purchasing BTC, shares of Coinbase and the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC).  

Wood also, as a true institutional bitcoin investor, owns other BTC ETFs, in this case futures. In addition, she is a clear influencer in investments at a general level, considering that her financial movements are monitored. In general, Cathie Wood is a reference for the institutional ecosystem that is also part of Bitcoin.

Jeremy Allaire, the CEO of Circle, the issuing company of USD Coin (USDC), the second most-used stablecoin in the entire market, is the next most influential person in the bitcoin ecosystem this year. The executive was in charge of making alliances with different fronts, such as traditional banking, in order to expand the company and its products.  

7. Gary Gensler

Reaching the middle of the list, one of the most influential (and controversial) characters in the bitcoin ecosystem in 2023. This is the current president of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), former banker Gary Gensler.  

At the head of the regulatory body, Gensler has been in charge of carrying out enforcement actions that have led, for example, to formal lawsuits and accusations of federal crimes against large companies in the cryptocurrency market, such as the Binance exchange. These actions have had a certain impact on the bitcoin community and industry, which is cautiously viewing what 2024 holds with Gensler still leading the SEC. 

However, far from discouraging the use of bitcoin in the US, Gensler has rather promoted the use of the digital currency. This is because the more he warns the SEC issues, the more he invites people to find out what regulators are hiding. 

8. John Dennehy

The founder of the non-governmental organization My First Bitcoin, John Dennehy, is another of the great influencers of the bitcoin industry this year. The director of the educational initiative born in El Salvador, he promoted the expansion of BTC teaching not only in that country, but in others in the region and beyond Latin American borders. This, strengthening knowledge about bitcoin among the grassroots community.

9. Michele Foletti

The mayor of the city of Lugano, in Switzerland, Michele Foletti, entered the list of influences in the bitcoin industry this year for allowing the establishment of the first Bitcoin citadel in Europe, in which hundreds of businesses accept BTC as payment and Municipal taxes can be paid using that digital currency. Foletti also allowed the Plan B project to go ahead, to massify the adoption of bitcoin in that Swiss community.

The executive director of the company that promotes hyperbitcoinization, JAN3, Samson Mow, also enters the list. The businessman has allowed himself to have high-level meetings with leaders from different countries in South America and other regions of the planet, to raise the issue of Bitcoin and its possible use cases.  

In addition to this, Mow has been willing to respond to the concerns of those interested in bitcoin, as well as looking for methods that adapt to the needs of each country.

11. Jack Dorsey

One of the most recognized bitcoiners is part of the list of influencers for 2023. This is Jack Dorsey, who has carried out projects related to Bitcoin wallets, to facilitate the development of more intuitive and easy-to-use wallets for users. Dorsey participated this year in funding Bitcoin developers and contributed to the culture of self-custody, creating products focused on it. 

12. Rodolfo Andragnes

One of the founders of the NGO Bitcoin Argentina, Rodolfo Andragnes, was another of the great influences of the bitcoin industry in 2023. The bitcoin enthusiast used his knowledge during meetings with the Argentine government to discuss matters related to BTC. Also, he has successfully carried out a new edition of the most important Bitcoin conference in all of Latin America, LaBitConf.  

13. Francisco Calderon

Venezuelan developer Francisco Calderón also appears on our list of influences. His exchange, lnp2pbot, has grown steadily and currently has thousands of users from different parts of the world. The same has happened with Mostro, a P2P bitcoin exchange that seeks to give users tools to resist financial censorship by authoritarian governments. For his work, Calderón received scholarships from large institutions, such as the Human Rights Foundation.  

14. Lunaticoin

Podcaster and bitcoin specialist Lunaticoin is recognized this year for his work in promoting the adoption of bitcoin from understanding and not speculation. Through his productions broadcast this year, the streamer focused on spreading the message of Bitcoin as a way of life, beyond a form of investment.  

15. Bitcoin Circular Economies

We do not dedicate the last position on our list to a specific person, but to a series of movements that, in 2023, had a huge impact in terms of Bitcoin adoption. These are circular economies, or also called bitcoiner citadels, that are scattered throughout the world.  

Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte, a town located in El Salvador, was the pioneer of bitcoiner citadels. In it, businesses, services and daily life are paid for in BTC, through wallets designed for the inhabitants of the area. 

El Zonte’s Bitcoin Beach model has been widely replicated since 2022, but with great notice in 2023. This is how, after the example of El Salvador, other initiatives, such as Praia Bitcoin, in Brazil; Bitcoin Jungle, in Costa Rica; Bitcoin Lake, in Guatemala and AmityAge, in Honduras; They kept working constantly in 2023, so they grew and supported each other. 

Bitcoin Yucatán, in Mexico; Bitcoin Ekasi, in Africa; Free Madeira, in Portugal and Bitcoin Island, in the Philippines; They are other of the bitcoin circular economies that have notably worked in 2023. This demonstrates that a world of BTC governs the economy is possible. 

Looking ahead to 2024

The described personalities and initiatives that most influence the Bitcoin industry during 2023 demonstrate that institutional investment, education, development and even regulation; are aspects that will always have an impact on the way the ecosystem performs.
